Kemerer happy at Penn State

Jake Kemerer always wanted to wrestle for Penn State.

When former Penn State coach Troy Sunderland didn’t offer him a scholarship, the 2009 Hempfield graduate chose the University of Oklahoma.

He signed a letter of intent during the early signing period last November and was looking forward to wrestling for the Sooners.

But when Kemerer had a change of heart, the two-time PIAA Class AAA champion requested a release from his obligation at Oklahoma so he could enroll at Penn State and join its wrestling team.

The request was denied by Sooners coach Jack Spates, the father of former Mt. Pleasant wrestler and two-time state champion Justin Spates.

  1. UncleLar, did Kemerer enroll at OU or was this just a release from his Letter of Intent?

  2. UncleLar says:

As far as I know Kemerer never enrolled at Oklahoma and the Kemerer’s are talking about an LOI release.

  3. Spoke to a close family friend and coach today, seems OU is NOT going to release him. They, OU, will loose that scholarship and Kemerer will loose a year of eligiblity too. NCAA rule may need to be looked at???
Please correct if that info is wrong.

I’ve forwarded this site to many wrestling friends and they as I are very grateful for your work here. Many thanks!!!

You’re quite welcome. Thanks for reading.
I am reasonably sure that OU won’t lose a scholarship by not releasing Kemerer. The NCAA starts counting kids when they enroll and actually receive aid. If a kid never enrolls, he’s never considered a counter.

Frankly, they almost have to do it that way because many wrestlers get partial scholarships. If a kid never enrolls there’s no way to know how much of a scholarship he was going to get – and it certainly wouldn’t be fair to a school to dock them a hole scholarship for a kid that was only going to get a partial.

Welcome. The site itself is only a couple of months old so everyone here is new. Thanks for participating.
