Legendary college wrestler Cael Sanderson was recently hired by Penn State to serve as the Lions’ new head wrestling coach – a move that turned the grappling world on its head. Sanderson is one of the most decorated U.S. wrestlers of all-time. A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Sanderson grew up in a family of wrestlers. He was the third of four brothers, all of whom were coached in high school by their father Steve. Cael finished high school with a 127-3 record and four state titles. He wasn’t finished. He took his passion for the sport to Iowa State University where he went on to complete his collegiate career with an undefeated record, going 159-0 and winning four national championships from 1999-2002. The record is consistently recognized as one of the greatest sports records of all-time. Cael capped off his wrestling career by winning a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Prior to moving on to Penn State, Sanderson was the head coach for his Alma Mater, Iowa State. PSR’s Jeff Breese caught up with Sanderson this fall.
