Sanderson drops former teammate for PSU’s lone title
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Penn State’s Cyler Sanderson and Purdue’s Colton Salazar started training together as five-year-olds in Wasatch, Utah, far away from the glare of major events such as the Big Ten Championships.
Both wrestlers had big dreams. But facing each other in a Big Ten final? No way, they thought.
On Sunday, the once-unthinkable happened, as Sanderson and Salazar wrestled for a 157-pound title in Crisler Arena, 1,600 miles from their Utah homes.
Sanderson prevailed 8-4, giving the Nittany Lions their only individual title on the way to a fifth-place finish. The victory was the highlight of a day where Penn State went 7-6 and qualified six wrestlers for this month’s NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb.
