ANTHONY MARINO VS. MEGALUDIS – lehighvalleylive.com

A clash of similar wide-open, high-scoring styles produced an exciting match between Liberty High School’s Anthony Marino and Nico Megaludis of Franklin Regional in the 119-pound at the PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships.

The combatants spent the first period feeling each other out before Marino started a competitive second two minutes with an escape. Megaludis then took the brief lead with a takedown, Marino took a 3-2 edge with a reversal and Megaludis tied it with an escape entering the final period.

The defending state champion controlled the action from there with an escape and two takedowns to secure another PIAA title.

No surprise: Central Mountain’s Andrew and Dylan Alton dominate their PIAA tournament openers

DUSTIN HOCKENSMITH, The Patriot-News

Central Mountain senior wrestlers Andrew and Dylan Alton turned in two of the most dominant performances of the PIAA Class AAA wrestling tournament. The twins accomplished their feats differently – one with a machine-like technical fall and one with a blink-and-you-missed-it pin.

Andrew Alton squared off with Mechanicsburg senior Rustin Barrick, who, to his credit, spent little time on his back in a 27-9 defeat. But, Barrick was no match for Alton on his feet during a match-long exchange of takedowns and escapes. Late in the second period, Alton put an end to the back-and-forth, sealing the tech fall with a takedown and adding three nearfall points for good measure.

CDT: Lions endure uneven results

Guy Cipriano

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Brad Pataky had stitches below his eye. Frank Molinaro’s face was bleeding. Cyler Sanderson wrestled with a bandage around an entire leg.

Physically, Penn State left the Big Ten Championships battered, although their aches appeared mild compared to Michigan State’s Nick Palmieri, who competed with an eye swollen shut.

Mentally, the Nittany Lions appear fine.

The tournament yielded mixed results for Penn State, which went 17-18 in individual bouts and finished fifth in the two-day event. The Nittany Lions, who placed seventh against a stronger field last year, currently have six NCAA qualifiers.
