Collegian: Coach lays foundation in debut
By Ryan Loy
Collegian Staff Writer
Year one: complete. In the first season under the guidance of Cael Sanderson, the Penn State wrestling team performed amid the excitement and expectations that came along with its new coach.
The Nittany Lions compiled a 13-6-1 dual meet record — a vast improvement on the 2008-09 mark of 8-12-2.
Add a Big Ten champion, three All-Americans and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA championships to the list of improvements in Sanderson’s first season at the helm.

MaxPreps: Altons finish remarkable career
Central Mountain twins end with two state high school wrestling titles.

MILL HALL, Pa. — Andrew Alton had to take a couple seconds to think about it.
In his four-year career, what hasn’t the Central Mountain senior accomplished?
State titles? Check. Regional titles? Four of them, to be exact.
The long laundry list continues on for miles and miles. Honestly, if you laid out his resume and accomplishments, it would probably stretch along the concrete pavement of Interstate 80, through the red lights on Route 15 and right into the doorway of the Giant Center in Hershey, the final stop on an amazing high school road.
Hbg Patriot: Nittany Lions add to honors at NCAA Division I wrestling championships

Penn State's Dan Vallimont, right, tries to get free from Stanford's Nick Amuchastegui, during the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships match in Omaha, Neb. on Friday.
OMAHA, Neb. – Even to the most demanding fan, Cael Sanderson’s first year as Penn State wrestling coach would be deemed a success.
Even with obvious weaknesses in the lineup, highlighted by redshirting four talented freshmen, Sanderson nudged the Nittany Lions to a 13-6-1 regular-season record and a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Tournament.
Sanderson can add three All-Americans and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Division I Championships to that modest list of accomplishments.

Pa. boasts most qualifiers in Omaha – Wrestling | Centre Daily Times – State College, PA
Andy Elder For the CDT
OMAHA, Neb. — Cael Sanderson said he left his alma mater because of the fertile recruiting area Penn State was surrounded by, not only the rest of Pennsylvania but Ohio, New Jersey and New York.
A couple stats support Sanderson’s decision.
Pennsylvania once again leads the way in qualifiers with 47. Ohio is next with 31 and New Jersey right behind at 29. New York is tied with California with 24 each. Interstate 80 is a thread connecting the three states with the most qualifiers
Collegian: Pataky credits heart to past

The small running back, Brad Pataky, was at a threshold — the three-sport athlete needed to choose one path.
Football ran in the family, as did baseball. The Clearfield native’s dad, Randy Pataky, was a former football player. The now-Nittany Lion’s sister, Brittany Pataky, would go on to play softball at Lock Haven. His dad never wrestled, but Brad Pataky knew if he’d have a future in any sport, it would be wrestling.
Collegian: Senior’s leadership sets tone for Lions
Collegian Staff Writer
On the way home from the Big Ten championship, Steve Sanderson and his son Cyler Sanderson contemplated the newest family achievement.
With the younger Sanderson’s 157-pound title in Ann Arbor, Mich., the senior has both a Big Ten and a Big 12 title in his four years of collegiate competition. But underneath the rare feat was a push — perhaps one the Nittany Lions needed. Maybe more important than the two conference titles was Cyler Sanderson, the only Lion to win a 2010 Big Ten title, setting the tone for Penn State.
