Phil Davis makes quick return, meets Alexander Gustafsson on UFC 112 prelims
Despite some concerns about his availability due to a possible shoulder injury, Phil Davis 5-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC apparently received encouraging MRI results and has agreed to fight fellow light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson 9-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC in April at UFC 112.
Sources close to the event confirmed with MMAjunkie.com www.mmajunkie.com that the bout is in the process of being finalized for the nights preliminary card.
Gustafsson mentioned the fight in an official blog posting earlier today.
The bout was first reported as a possibility by MMAFrenzy.com over the weekend.
Sherdog/Phil Davis article
Very interesting article in Sherdog that captures Phil Davis’s perspective on Black History Month. I encourage everyone to read the article.
Shrerdog honors Black History Month by “Bucking Stereotypes”
Honoring Black History Month, former wrestling standouts turned cage stars, Muhammed Lawal and Phil Davis, share their thoughts on race in Mixed Martial Arts. This very open and honest dialogue ponders the complex racial dynamics of a sport that may very well be the most racially diverse popular sport in American. African Americans hold a special place in the history of sports in America. As fighters like King Mo, Rashad Evans, and Jon Jones advance in the world of MMA, how will this same history find its place in Mixed Martial Arts?
Phil Davis on Winning His UFC Debut and Facing Big Expectations
Mike Chiappetta
With a collegiate wrestling championship in his background, an unbeaten professional record and a nickname of “Mr. Wonderful,” it’s no wonder that Phil Davis entered the UFC surrounded by great expectations.
Suffice it to say, in his first octagon test at UFC 109, the former Penn State All-American passed with flying colors, dominating former WEC light-heayvweight champion Brian Stann in a unanimous decision victory.

Five Ounces of Pain Blog: UFC 109 – The Aftermatch
Raw Talent. “Mr. Wonderful” making it look easy. Finally, Phil Davis has arrived. I’ve been telling anyone that would listen for the last year about this ridiculously talented former NCAA Champion wrestler out of Penn State that was poised to have a tremendous impact on the future of the UFC’s light heavyweight division, and Davis’ performance at UFC 109 solidified my belief that the undefeated twenty-five year old has all of the tools necessary to go as far as he chooses to in the sport in due time. Davis is one of the few wrestlers with the unique ability to convert a series of takedowns combined with technical top control throughout the course of a bout into of the most fascinating aspects of the game to watch. Top notch wrestling at it’s finest combined with what appears to be an unlimited level of raw fighting talent for the still developing Davis have officially merged to put the ENTIRE light heavyweight division on notice.
UFC: Davis Impressive in Debut
Former NCAA Division I National champion wrestler Phil Davis didn’t look like a UFC debutant with only four previous fights to his name as he made quite an impression with a dominant three round unanimous decision win over Brian Stann. Watch fight
Scores were 30-26 twice, and 30-27 for Davis, who improves to 5-0; Stann falls to 8-3.
Phil Davis Announces His Arrival at UFC 109

Not all UFC debuts go according to plan.
Some turn out to have been grossly over-hyped and have no cardio to speak of ** cough Rolles Gracie cough **, while other succumb to the pressures of fighting on the biggest stage around. Some are simply beaten by better opposition.
And some are Phil Davis.
The Penn State product had as dominant a debut as any young fighter in the UFC has had in quite some time, earning a Unanimous Decision to push his record to 5-0 and showing why he is near the top of just about every MMA prospect list for 2010.
