CDT: Lions leaning on senior class in Ann Arbor

Guy Cipriano

He wrestled his final dual meet last month. He chuckled when somebody mentioned it two days beforehand.

He begins his final Big Ten Championships today. He chuckled when somebody mentioned it a week beforehand.

If Penn State’s three other seniors handle nostalgic moments with the same resolve as Dan Vallimont, the Nittany Lions could be primed for a better postseason showing than last year.

When the conference tournament begins at 11 a.m. today at Michigan’s Crisler Arena, the Nittany Lions are relying on seniors with conflicting postseason histories.

Hbg Patriot: Penn State wrestler Adam Lynch reaps rewards for perservering

By The Patriot-News

STATE COLLEGE – Before Jan. 29, Mike and Melissa Lynch harbored no plans to spend the third week of March in Omaha, Neb., watching the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

On that night, Adam Lynch, Mike and Melissa’s son, secured the signature win of his unlikely senior season as Penn State’s starting 141-pounder.

“That’s when his mom and I started believing,” Mike Lynch said.

CDT: Seven seeds to pace Lions at Big Tens

Guy Cipriano – gciprian@centredaily.com

Cael Sanderson never whiffed in earning NCAA qualifiers during his three years as Iowa State’s head coach.

Maintaining the perfect percentage during his season at Penn State will be tougher despite some gaudy seedings.

The Big Ten released preseeds for this weekend’s tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., and seven Nittany Lions earned top four seeds in their respective weight classes. The pre-seeds were determined by a vote of conference coaches based on regular-season results.

Final brackets will be released Friday. Wrestling begins Saturday and concludes Sunday at Crisler Arena.

Collegian: Gophers snap Penn State’s four-meet win streak

By Brendan Monahan

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State 125-pounder Brad Pataky ran to the mat’s center to the awaiting referee, who grabbed the redshirt junior’s hand and raised it in the air.

Pataky simply had to make an appearance on the mat to solidify his win Friday. No. 6 Zach Sanders of No. 5 Minnesota sat out because of an ankle injury, and the Penn State wrestling team found itself leading at the get-go.

CDT: Sanderson has Lions cooking on the mat

A few thoughts, while wondering if the snow will be gone before May:

Many years ago, a former college wrestling coach was asked about how his team would do that season.

His blunt response — put in a little kinder language here — came in cooking terms and that how it would be difficult, given his team’s current ingredients, to make chicken salad.

I think most of you get the drift here.

Well, Cael Sanderson must have gone to a different culinary school. The first-year Penn State wrestling coach is on par with Emeril Lagasse or Bobby Flay.
