Nittany Lions’ pins spark win over WVU

So, even after his No. 14 Nittany Lions (5-1-1) overcame seemingly insurmountable odds Saturday night at Fitzgerald Field House to tie No. 24 Pitt (6-1-1), 19-19, Sanderson bottom lined the match.

“A tie is a loss,” he said.

Pittsburgh came storming out of the gates when freshman Anthony Zanetta stunned No. 7 Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.) 15-9. Pitt added decisions at 133 and 141, putting Penn State down 9-0 after three bouts. All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) got a 13-4 major over Pitt's Eric Albright at 149 and All-American Cyler Sanderson (Heber City, Utah) got a four-point (no back points) technical fall (26-11 at the 6:49 mark) over the Panthers' Mark Powell. Those two wins cut the Pitt lead to 9-8. A third Lion All-American, senior Dan Vallimont (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.), gave Penn State a 12-9 lead with a 16-5 major over Panther Karl DeCiantis at 165. The wins from the sixth-, third- and ninth-ranked wrestlers helped Penn State come back from Pitt's early flurry.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State senior David Erwin hasn’t been in Ohio since his teenage years, so excuse him for possessing no pre-tournament knowledge of Edinboro’s Chris Honeycutt, another former Buckeye state star.

By early Sunday evening, Erwin knew all about Honeycutt, including how to defeat the wrestler two of his younger teammates couldn’t master.

Erwin used guile to edge Honeycutt 9-8 in the 184-pound final of the annual Nittany Lion Open at Rec Hall. He was one of three Penn State veterans to capture titles. Rejuvenated Frank Molinaro cruised to the 149-pound title while senior Cyler Sanderson edged freshman teammate David Taylor 8-7 in an entertaining final at 157.

For The Patriot-News

STATE COLLEGE – Those diehard fans who braved the almost 10 hours of wrestling during the Nittany Lion Open on Sunday at Rec Hall saw a theme appropriate for the season — “A Christmas Carol.”

The Penn State wrestling team enjoyed success from Nittany Lions past, present and future.

Among Nittany Lion starters, three won championships, one was a runner-up, another was third, a part-time starter was fourth, another was fifth and another part-timer was eighth.

Three Nittany Lions who are redshirting turned in second-, third- and fifth-place performances.

And a future Nittany Lion, who is still a senior in high school, took eighth.

Penn State crowned three of the tournament's ten champions in a crowded field featuring many of the nation's best wrestlers.

Sophomore All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.), ranked No. 6 at 149, blazed his way to a 5-0 mark and the title at 149. Molinaro was unstoppable in his wins, outscoring his five foes by a combined score of 36-6. Senior All-American Cyler Sanderson (Heber City, Utah), ranked No.4 at 157, downed true freshman teammate David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) 9-7 in a thrilling final at 157 to claim the crown. Sanderson went 5-0 to take first while Taylor went 4-1 (including a pin of the 17th-ranked wrestler in the nation) to take second. Senior David Erwin (Urbana, Ohio) battled his way through a rugged field at 184 to go 5-0 and claim the title. Erwin got a last-second takedown over Edinboro's Chris Honeycutt to win 9-8 in the finals. He also downed No. 10 Josh Patterson of Binghamton in the semifinals.

TODAY’S ACTION The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, ranked No. 15 nationally, will return to action after a weekend off to take part in the 2009 Nittany Lion Open. Penn State (4-1, 0-0 Big Ten) will be in action beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Rec Hal. The NLO is not part of the Penn State season ticket package and tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event. Head coach Cael Sanderson will send much of his starting line-up and most of his vaunted red-shirts on to the mats.

Erwin and English take second as six Nittany Lions place at Open event

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Sophomore Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) and freshman David Taylor (St. Parish, Ohio), both red-shirting this year and wrestling unattached, claimed individual titles at the 2009 Mat-Town U.S.A. tournament, hosted by Lock Haven University. Six members of the 12 man Penn State contingent placed at the event.

Wright posted a perfect 3-0 mark at 184, getting two pins along the way, to claim the title. The 2009 All-American at 184 downed Penn State senior David Erwin (Urbana, Ohio) in the finals, pinning his teammate at the 2:38 mark. Erwin was also outstanding at the event, going 3-1 with a major and a pin of his own, to claim second place. Erwin is now 5-1 at his new weight (184). Taylor claimed his second open tournament individual crown, posting a superb 4-0 mark to win the 157 pound crown. Taylor notched three technical falls and a pin in the tournament and improved his unattached record this year to a gaudy 12-1 with eight technical falls and two pins.
