“Everywhere I would go, whether it was getting breakfast or a haircut, people were saying they can’t wait for 2010-11,” associate head coach Cody Sanderson said. “People are excited about the recruits that are going to be in our lineup. But we left it at that. We owed it to the program to keep our focus on 2009-10.”

Such was the conundrum facing the start of Cael Sanderson’s tenure.

The future looked promising. But the present demanded unwavering attention.

UNIVERSITY PARK — The freshman walk-ons who never medaled at the PIAA Class AAA Championships sat in their dorm room last year and visualized what others deemed unlikely.

Together, Bryan Pearsall and Justin Ortega glimpsed into the future. Their imaginations helped them endure a crowded practice room, where they toiled in anonymity, far away from Rec Hall’s signature evenings.

“We were thinking, ‘Man, it would be really cool wrestling out there in front of thousands of people,’” Ortega said.

The friends visualized many outcomes. Neither envisioned what has transpired this season.

Penn State 125-pounder Brad Pataky ran to the mat’s center to the awaiting referee, who grabbed the redshirt junior’s hand and raised it in the air.

Pataky simply had to make an appearance on the mat to solidify his win Friday. No. 6 Zach Sanders of No. 5 Minnesota sat out because of an ankle injury, and the Penn State wrestling team found itself leading at the get-go.

Though the No. 10 Nittany Lions received the maximum amount of points heading into the 133-pound matchup, the lead slipped away as No. 1 Jayson Ness pinned Bryan Pearsall (1:17), and No. 8 Mike Thorn defeated No. 20 141-pounder Adam Lynch by fall (2:18). The losses put the Lions (13-6-1, 5-3) in a hole en route to a 26-16 loss to the Golden Gophers (12-5, 7-1), snapping a four-meet win streak.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Dan Vallimont skipped rope as he watched Friday’s 174-pound bout from behind Penn State’s bench.

This quick cardiovascular workout proved different than others. The fifth-year senior performed a routine task knowing he had joined an accomplished group.

Vallimont became the 25th Nittany Lion to reach 100 career victories as he defeated Kyle Bounds 3-1 at 165 in Friday’s 26-12 victory over Michigan State at Rec Hall.

The No. 10 Penn State wrestling team 13-5-1, 5-2 Big Ten won seven of 10 bouts to turn away Michigan State 8-6-1, 2-4, 26-12, Friday night as 4,408 fans helped the Nittany Lions celebrate Senior Night.

The four seniors in the lineup – 141-pounder Adam Lynch, 157-pounder Cyler Sanderson, 165-pounder Dan Vallimont and 184-pounder David Erwin – all won their final bouts in Rec Hall. A perfect 4-0.
