CDT: Sanderson has Lions cooking on the mat
A few thoughts, while wondering if the snow will be gone before May:
Many years ago, a former college wrestling coach was asked about how his team would do that season.
His blunt response — put in a little kinder language here — came in cooking terms and that how it would be difficult, given his team’s current ingredients, to make chicken salad.
I think most of you get the drift here.
Well, Cael Sanderson must have gone to a different culinary school. The first-year Penn State wrestling coach is on par with Emeril Lagasse or Bobby Flay.

PhillyBurbs.com: Penn State pinning hopes on Sanderson
By Ed Kracz
Staff Writer
The greatest wrestler to ever don headgear has his team climbing slowly up the national rankings.
Penn State broke into the top 10 wrestling rankings on Tuesday at No. 10, but it’s nowhere near where Cael Sanderson wants the Nittany Lions to be.
Yes, that Cael Sanderson. The never-been-beaten Cael Sanderson, or, put another way, the undefeated Cael Sanderson, the wrestler who went 159-0 in his four-year career at Iowa State, the gold-medal winner at the 2004 Olympic Games — Penn State’s first-year coach.

Philly Inq: Building a new attitude on Penn St. mat

By Stephen Hennessey
For The Inquirer
Nobody could have seen this hire coming.
The best wrestler in the history of college wrestling was building a dynasty at his alma mater. Then Penn State came calling.
Last April, after a disappointing 17th-place finish in the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Troy Sunderland resigned after nine years as head coach at Penn State, and a nationwide search for a replacement soon ensued.
Tim Curley, Penn State’s athletic director, lured 28-year-old Cael Sanderson away from Iowa State, two weeks after Sunderland’s departure.

A crowd of over eight thousand spectators flocked to the Carver Hawkeye on a cold Friday night, to witness the top ranked Iowa wrestlers dismantle Cael Sanderson and the 13th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions 29-6. As they have done most of the season, the Hawkeyes came out firing early and often, as Matt McDonough started with a win at 125. Other Hawkeye winners were Daniel Dennis, Ryan Morningstar, Top ranked Jay Borschel, Phil Keddy, Luke Lofthouse and Dan Erekson. Brent Metcalf once again has put the wrestling world on notice, as he pinned fifth ranked Frank Molinaro in 3:56.
