CDT: Lions endure uneven results
Guy Cipriano
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Brad Pataky had stitches below his eye. Frank Molinaro’s face was bleeding. Cyler Sanderson wrestled with a bandage around an entire leg.
Physically, Penn State left the Big Ten Championships battered, although their aches appeared mild compared to Michigan State’s Nick Palmieri, who competed with an eye swollen shut.
Mentally, the Nittany Lions appear fine.
The tournament yielded mixed results for Penn State, which went 17-18 in individual bouts and finished fifth in the two-day event. The Nittany Lions, who placed seventh against a stronger field last year, currently have six NCAA qualifiers.
Controversial Wade (PSU) Erekson (IA) match
Wade dives at the knees of Erekson after the whistle which causes a controversy when Iowa’s Coach Brands rushes onto the mat only to be challenged by Sanderson.
Wade clearly was wrong in the takedown attempt but, in his defense, there didn’t seem to be any reason for the ref to blow his whistle. Erekson could see the ref wave his hands and relaxed but Wade had his back to him and couldn’t see it. Given all the whistles blowing on all the mats it’s hard to blame Wade. The ref’s responsible for making sure that both wrestlers know what’s going on.
