No. 15 Penn State Set for 2009 Nittany Lion Open

Most of Sanderson’s roster to take part, action begins at 8:30 a.m. in Rec Hall

TODAY’S ACTION The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, ranked No. 15 nationally, will return to action after a weekend off to take part in the 2009 Nittany Lion Open. Penn State (4-1, 0-0 Big Ten) will be in action beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Rec Hal. The NLO is not part of the Penn State season ticket package and tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event. Head coach Cael Sanderson will send much of his starting line-up and most of his vaunted red-shirts on to the mats.

Collegian: Coach: Jenkins likely to redshirt

Amid Bubba Jenkins being academically ineligible for the fall semester, the 149-pounder could also redshirt this upcoming season.

Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson said “there’s a good chance” the 2008 All-American could sit out of competition for the entire season. As of now, Jenkins would be eligible to compete after final exams week, which takes place Dec. 14-18. If Jenkins sits out, he would be the second All-American — the other being Quentin Wright — to redshirt this season.

After the 2009 NCAA Championships, Jenkins stressed his content with redshirting this upcoming season, but that was before Sanderson took hold of the program.

Bubba Jenkins admits he wasn’t even in shape at this point last season.

Each practice, even though the season has not started, has been harder than last year’s most difficult practice, redshirt sophomore Clay Steadman said.

The wrestlers were used to training for an extended period of time in the Lorenzo Wrestling Complex, but not spending a Friday night there for breaking a team rule.
