“Everywhere I would go, whether it was getting breakfast or a haircut, people were saying they can’t wait for 2010-11,” associate head coach Cody Sanderson said. “People are excited about the recruits that are going to be in our lineup. But we left it at that. We owed it to the program to keep our focus on 2009-10.”

Such was the conundrum facing the start of Cael Sanderson’s tenure.

The future looked promising. But the present demanded unwavering attention.

Senior 157-pounder Cyler Sanderson is the Nittany Lions’ lone finalist. Sanderson defeated Michigan State’s Anthony Jones 6-0 in the semifinals to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Sanderson meets Minnesota’s Dustin Schlatter in today’s finals. Schlatter defeated Sanderson 4-0 in the regular-season finale. The 157-pound weight class receives four NCAA qualifiers.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestlers are sitting in fifth place after one day of wrestling at the 2010 Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Nittany Lions will have one wrestler competing in tomorrow’s Big Ten finals, have three NCAA qualifiers so far and four others still needing wins in tomorrow's consolation action to advance to nationals.

Penn State senior Cyler Sanderson (Heber City, Utah) advanced to the finals at 157 with a strong 6-0 win over Michigan State’s Anthony Jones in the semifinals. Sanderson clinched an automatic bid to NCAAs and will meet top-seeded Colton Salazar in the finals tomorrow.

ANN ARBOR, Mich.; March 6, 2010 – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team finds itself in second place after the first session of the 2010 Big Ten Wrestling Championships. Penn State will have seven wrestlers in tonight’s semifinals with the other three continuing wrestling in consolation action.

Iowa leads the team race with 93.0 points while Penn State is in second with 59.0. Minnesota sits in third with 56.5 while Wisconsin is in fourth with 47.5. Ohio State is also close by with 46.0. Michigan State (28.0), Illinois (22.0), Indiana (20.0), Purdue (18.0), Michigan (16.0) and Northwestern (4.0) round out the field.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota handed Penn State six points to begin Friday’s regular-season finale. The Nittany Lions failed to parlay the gift into their first victory over a top-10 team.

The fifth-ranked Golden Gophers won six of nine bouts contested as they dropped the 10th-ranked Nittany Lions 26-16 on Friday at the Sports Pavilion.

Penn State ends its first dual meet season under coach Cael Sanderson 13-6-1 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions went 0-6 against teams in the top 10 of the NWCA/USA Today rankings.

UNIVERSITY PARK – He had a 9-0 major decision over Northwestern’s Andrew Nadhir, but Penn State’s fourth-ranked 149-pounder, Frank Molinaro, felt kind of left out Friday night at Rec Hall.

“Yeah, seriously,” Molinaro said, “I’ve got to get a pin. This is getting crazy. I only have one this year.”

Molinaro was envious because the 11th-ranked Nittany Lions recorded three pins – rare for a college dual meet – against the Wildcats, who are 0-4 in the Big Ten Conference after the graduation of Hodge Trophy winner Jake Herbert, to go with two major decision and a forfeit in a 37-10 rout before 3,841 fans as a winter storm was blowing through outside.

The No. 11 Nittany Lions (11-5-1, 3-2 Big Ten) made sure to add many more points as they defeated Northwestern 37-10 in front of nearly 4,000 fans in Rec Hall.

When 3,841 fans brave a raging snowstorm to attend a sporting event, most would agree they deserve to be rewarded with a dominating, entertaining win by the home team.

That’s exactly what those fans got Friday night in Rec Hall as No. 11 Penn State (11-5-1, 3-2 Big Ten) won seven of 10 bouts, scoring at least one bonus point in each, to dispatch Northwestern Wildcats (5-9-1, 0-4), 37-10.

“I think, overall, we’;re wrestling with a good energy. That’;s a big deal for us, especially this time of the year. It’;s a time to be excited,” Sanderson said.
