Whether he was ordering bacon and eggs or visiting his barber, the older brother of Penn State’s celebrated first-year wrestling coach couldn’t escape the chatter.

“Everywhere I would go, whether it was getting breakfast or a haircut, people were saying they can’t wait for 2010-11,” associate head coach Cody Sanderson said. “People are excited about the recruits that are going to be in our lineup. But we left it at that. We owed it to the program to keep our focus on 2009-10.”

Such was the conundrum facing the start of Cael Sanderson’s tenure.

The future looked promising. But the present demanded unwavering attention.

Any parent can relate to the anxiety and angst of watching a son or daughter compete in an athletic endeavor.

Multiply that by a factor of at least 10 and you’ll start to approach what Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson and assistant coach Cody Sanderson will be experiencing as they watch younger brother and Nittany Lion 157-pounder Cyler Sanderson compete at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

“It’s tough. It really is tough. It took me a while to really kind of figure it out. It hasn’t changed much. I just know how important it is to him. I feel real confident in him and I’ve always been really proud because he always goes out there and fights,” Cael said.

STATE COLLEGE — The Sanderson boys stuck together from Iowa State to Penn State.

Now they’re making one more trip to the NCAA tournament together nearly a year after a whirlwind courtship lured Cael Sanderson from his alma mater to coach the Nittany Lions.

Cody, the oldest of the Sanderson brothers at 33, is Cael’s top assistant. Cyler, a 23-year-old senior, is one of the nation’s best wrestlers at 157 pounds.

“It would have been a lot more difficult” without his brothers, Cael Sanderson said of making the jump to Happy Valley. “I’m real grateful that they both came with me, and it wasn’t easy for either one of them.”

The Sandersons all wrestled at Iowa State, and Cody and Cael later coached the Cyclones while Cyler was on the team. Two brothers coaching a younger brother at the same program is rare in big-time college athletics.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Cael Sanderson was a college wrestling legend at Iowa State.

He never lost a match, going 159-0 en route to capturing four NCAA titles. He also won a freestyle gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

In April, Penn State pulled off one of the biggest shockers in college wrestling history, hiring Sanderson away from his coaching position at his alma mater.

Junior Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.), ranked No. 6 at 125, opened up the dual with a solid 4-0 win over No. 8 Eric Morrill to give Penn State an early lead. Sophomore Tyler Saltsman (Concord, N.H.) followed with a 7-3 decision at 133 before Edinboro got a win at 141. UNIVERSITY PARK — The new coach brought along his big and little brothers, one of his closest friends and heralded recruits who initially committed elsewhere.

Throw it all together, and Penn State’s cur rent wrestlers operate in a serene environment.

Instead of being quizzed about last year’s struggles, they field questions about coach Cael Sanderson, the four-time NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist who replaced Troy Sunderland in April.

Along with Sanderson, came two of his brothers, associate head coach Cody and All- American 157-pounder Cyler, assistant coach Casey Cunningham, dynamic freshmen middleweights David Taylor and Jake Kemerer, who committed to Iowa State and Oklahoma, respectively, and new philosophies to training and competing. The changes make it easy to forget about last year’s struggles, which included a 17th-place NCAA showing and 8-12-2 dual meet record.

Lehigh coach Pat Santoro can relate to what Penn State’s Cael Sanderson has experienced the past seven months.

Santoro started his Mountain Hawk tenure last year, replacing longtime coach Greg Strobel. Santoro led Lehigh to a 23-1 dual meet record and a 28th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in his first season.

“There’s a lot of excitement that comes with a new staff,” Santoro said Wednesday. “Penn State should get a little boost from it.”

Santoro hopes the boost doesn’t come when the Nittany Lions and Mountain Hawks (1-0) meet Friday at Stabler Arena.
