A five-day span during winter break saw three wrestlers leave the Penn State wrestling team as coach Cael Sanderson’s intense approach begins to test his wrestlers.

Sanderson confirmed Dec. 30 that Bubba Jenkins and Luke Macchiaroli had left the team. Following the team’s Jan. 3 dual meet at Lock Haven, he announced that Colby Pisani had also departed. He said he did not know if the departures were a result of his intense coaching style.

Brad Pataky’s pin in the opening bout of Sunday’s dual meet was a sign of things to come for the Penn State wrestling team.

The No. 15 Nittany Lions (6-1-1) handled Lock Haven on their way to an impressive 32-6 victory.

With a two-week break between last month’s Reno Tournament of Champions and today’s dual meet at Lock Haven, Penn State’s wrestling season split into tidy halves.

Listening to those who oversee the team’s progress produces twoconclusions about the first half.

1. Penn State improved in enough areas to escape with a 5-1-1 dual meet record;

2. The internal expectations are higher this semester.

“The first semester was productive for us,” associate head coach Cody Sanderson said. “We made some improvements in some areas we needed to make improvement. But we have a lot of work to do before we get to the national tournament.

The Penn State wrestling team’s trip to the Reno Tournament of Champions ended with a third-place finish in a field of 25 teams.

Without Cameron Wade, the Nittany Lions didn’t present a wrestler in the heavyweight class. Although 10 Penn State wrestlers competed, only nine counted toward the team score because of the absence of a heavyweight participant.

Penn State had to overcome considerable odds to get a 19-19 tie with host University of Pittsburgh Saturday night… but Nittany Lions' head coach Cael Sanderson was not looking at the outcome in a positive way.

PITTSBURGH, Pa.; December 12, 2009 – Wrestling without two starters, a shorthanded Penn State wrestling team stormed back from an early 9-0 deficit to win five straight bouts in the middle of the dual to walk away with a 19-19 tie at No. 24 Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Lions, ranked No. 14 nationally, already forfeiting at 197, were dealt a serious blow in warm ups when sophomore heavyweight Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio) was injured and could not wrestle.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — No. 14 Penn State blasted its way through the home standing West Virginia Mountaineers, winning seven of ten bouts to post a 33-12 win in Morgantown. Penn State picked up three straight pins heading into the midway point to coast to victory.

Junior Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.), ranked No. 7 at 125, got things off to a good start with an 11-5 win over WVU's Shane Young. The Mountaineers got a major decision at 133 before head coach Cael Sanderson's crew unleashed a flurry of pins to put the bout out of reach. Sophomore Colby Pisani (Ridgway, Pa.), All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) and All-American Cyler Sanderson (Heber City, Utah) each got pins to put Penn State up 21-4. Pisani got his pin at the 5:28 mark, No. 6 Molinaro got his at the 5:22, and No. 3 Sanderson got his early in the first at the 2:22 mark.

With new head coach Cael Sanderson, the Penn State wrestling program scored its fifth straight win of the season, easily handling West Virginia University, 33-12, in a Friday dual meet in Morgantown, WV.

After the two schools each one the first two bouts, Penn State scored three falls in a row, putting the meet out of reach of the Mountaineers. Colby Pisani at 141 pounds, Frank Molinaro at 149, and Cael's younger brother Cyler Sanderson at 157 each scored pins to put the Nittany Lions out in front, 21-4, before intermission.

Thanks to three straight pins, the Penn State wrestling team (5-1) cruised to a 33-12 victory Friday over West Virginia.

With the Nittany Lions down 4-3, Colby Pisani notched a fall at the 5:28 mark of the 141-pound bout. Frank Molinaro (149) and Cyler Sanderson (157) also won by fall to push the Lions' lead to 21-4.
