Paatriot: Penn State’s Sanderson brothers are on stage at NCAA Wrestling Championships

BY ANDY ELDER, For The Patriot-News

Any parent can relate to the anxiety and angst of watching a son or daughter compete in an athletic endeavor.

Multiply that by a factor of at least 10 and you’ll start to approach what Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson and assistant coach Cody Sanderson will be experiencing as they watch younger brother and Nittany Lion 157-pounder Cyler Sanderson compete at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

College wrestling has turned into a high-tech game with many Division I coaches and wrestlers scanning hours of DVDs before dual meets and tournaments.

At Penn State, the sport still carries primitive characteristics.

The Nittany Lions didn’t bring a traveling video library or multiple pieces of expensive equipment to Omaha., Neb., where the NCAA Championships begin at noon Thursday.

If coach Cael Sanderson had his way, wrestling Web sites would be blocked from laptops. Instead of studying opponents and brackets, the Nittany Lions are being instructed to worry about themselves this week.

On the way home from the Big Ten championship, Steve Sanderson and his son Cyler Sanderson contemplated the newest family achievement.

With the younger Sanderson’s 157-pound title in Ann Arbor, Mich., the senior has both a Big Ten and a Big 12 title in his four years of collegiate competition. But underneath the rare feat was a push — perhaps one the Nittany Lions needed. Maybe more important than the two conference titles was Cyler Sanderson, the only Lion to win a 2010 Big Ten title, setting the tone for Penn State.

The collegiate wrestling season can be divided into three parts — the regular season, conference championships and national championships — with each building in importance.

Right now, six members of the Penn State wrestling team are making the transition to the pinnacle of the season as they prepare to compete at the 2010 NCAA championships, which begin Thursday in Omaha, Neb.

The six Nittany Lion grapplers earned the opportunity to wrestle for a national title by leading the Lions to a strong performance at the Big Ten championships March 6-7.
