By Brendan Monahan

Penn State 125-pounder Brad Pataky ran to the mat’s center to the awaiting referee, who grabbed the redshirt junior’s hand and raised it in the air.

Pataky simply had to make an appearance on the mat to solidify his win Friday. No. 6 Zach Sanders of No. 5 Minnesota sat out because of an ankle injury, and the Penn State wrestling team found itself leading at the get-go.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota handed Penn State six points to begin Friday’s regular-season finale. The Nittany Lions failed to parlay the gift into their first victory over a top-10 team.

The fifth-ranked Golden Gophers won six of nine bouts contested as they dropped the 10th-ranked Nittany Lions 26-16 on Friday at the Sports Pavilion.

Penn State ends its first dual meet season under coach Cael Sanderson 13-6-1 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions went 0-6 against teams in the top 10 of the NWCA/USA Today rankings.

In recent weeks, members of the Penn State wrestling team have jogged back to the center of the circle and waited for opponents following restarts.

As the season wears on, even the little things like that show that the Nittany Lion wrestlers appear to be gaining strength. Not only have they been beating teams on the scoreboard, several Lion grapplers believe they have been in superior shape.

Collegian: Crowell sees energy increase, sets sight on first Big Ten win

Despite being winless in Big Ten bouts this year, Dave Crowell is hopeful his time is coming.

Dave Crowell sees his opponents are bigger than he is on match day, and though he hasn’t won a Big Ten bout, Crowell doesn’t worry.

“Most guys get weaker as the season goes on,” Crowell said Saturday after losing 6-5 to Michigan State’s Tyler Dickenson Friday. “I’m getting stronger.”

While his opponents have to cut weight, Crowell said he doesn’t miss a meal. Thanks to that model, Crowell sees his energy increasing. And as his strength grows, Crowell’s shots can only become more effective.

As Penn State 165-pounder Dave Vallimont calmly walked off the mat following his Senior Night win over Michigan State's Kyle Bounds, the casual observer would have never realized the milestone the senior had just reached.

By beating Bounds 3-1 Friday night at Rec Hall in No. 10 Penn State's 26-12 win over the Spartans, Vallimont earned his 100th win as a Lion — and did it in his last home match.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Dan Vallimont skipped rope as he watched Friday’s 174-pound bout from behind Penn State’s bench.

This quick cardiovascular workout proved different than others. The fifth-year senior performed a routine task knowing he had joined an accomplished group.

Vallimont became the 25th Nittany Lion to reach 100 career victories as he defeated Kyle Bounds 3-1 at 165 in Friday’s 26-12 victory over Michigan State at Rec Hall.
