Collegian: Competition powers Taylor

By Ryan Loy

Collegian Staff Writer

When he comes through the doors into the Lorenzo Wrestling Complex, his lanky build looks like it doesn’t belong.

Certainly, the baby-faced freshman doesn’t belong in a room alongside brawny grapplers like Frank Molinaro.

But when people see the smile on his face and his playful interactions with coaches and teammates, it’s obvious David Taylor belongs in the wresting room. In fact, he was considered the nation’s top recruit coming out of high school after winning four Ohio state championships.

Despite his success, Taylor believes his appearance may cause his opponents to underestimate his abilities.

Four of six Lions competing place as Ruth takes second at 184

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Six members of the Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, including top red-shirts, competed at the National Collegiate Open at Clarion on Saturday. True freshman David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) and red-shirting All-American Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) won titles at 157 and 184 pound weight classes respectively.

CDT: Sanderson has Lions cooking on the mat

A few thoughts, while wondering if the snow will be gone before May:

Many years ago, a former college wrestling coach was asked about how his team would do that season.

His blunt response — put in a little kinder language here — came in cooking terms and that how it would be difficult, given his team’s current ingredients, to make chicken salad.

I think most of you get the drift here.

Well, Cael Sanderson must have gone to a different culinary school. The first-year Penn State wrestling coach is on par with Emeril Lagasse or Bobby Flay.

Penn State fares well at Edinboro Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Eleven members of the Penn State wrestling team headed north to take part in the 2010 Edinboro Open and eight of that group earned places at the event.  Red-shirts David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), Jake Kemerer (Greensburg, Pa.) and Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) all earned titles.

Each of Penn State’s entrants was unattached at the non-traditional tournament and, since bouts were not of regulation length (six minutes with three separate two-minute periods instead of seven minutes); none of the results count on the wrestlers records.

CDT: Kemerer, redshirts antsy for mat time

UNIVERSITY PARK — Jake Kemerer and the rest of Penn State’s redshirt wrestlers sit in bleachers behind the home bench during meets at Rec Hall.

Watching teammates is becoming a tired practice for Kemerer, a true freshman 165-pounder.

“It’s kind of a hard,” he said. “But it’s kind of a preview for next season.”

To prepare for 2010-11, Kemerer, along with some other high-profile teammates, are abandoning the bleacher seats saved for tonight’s home finale against Michigan State.
