With a week between the Big Ten championships and NCAA championships, Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson took a break from preparations to observe some of his prized recruits in action at the PIAA wrestling tournament.

Three defending state champs, Central Mountain’s Andrew and Dylan Alton and Coudersport’s Dirk Cowburn, are Penn State recruits for next season, and Franklin Regional junior 119-pounder Nico Megaludis has verbaled to PSU.

Clash of champs: Coudersport’s Dirk Cowburn, Benton’s Eric Hess on collision course at 160

BOB FLOUNDERS, The Patriot-News, March 11, 2010 3:43 p.m.

There are few sure things at the PIAA wrestling championships. But it would be surprising, very surprising, if Coudersport’s Dirk Cowburn and Benton’s Eric Hess don’t meet in Saturday’s Class AA 160-pound final at Hershey's Giant Center.

The two seniors, returning state champions, are clearly the class of the weight. Cowburn is a Penn State recruit and Hess will attend Lehigh.

Favorites get through early at PIAA wrestling

HERSHEY, Pa. — Dirk Cowburn barely looked out of breath. It took just 80 seconds for the Coudersport senior to pin his opponent in his first-round bout.

Not a bad way for the two-time champ to start his final PIAA wrestling tournament.

“Every time you come into a tournament like this, your name's in the books … two-time state champs, of course everyone is trying to beat you,” Cowburn said Thursday at the Giant Center. “That's what makes it exciting.”

Pennsylvania has long been known as a hotbed of wrestling; since about, well, forever.
