Pgh Post Gazette: Pinning glory
By Chris Adamski, Tri-State Sports & News Service
HERSHEY, Pa. — Throughout his high school career, Matthew Cunningham gradually worked his way up the PIAA Class AA place-winner ladder before finally breaking through with a championship.
Shady Side Academy teammate, Frank Martellotti, won his title early on — as a freshman — and finished among the PIAA’s top three every year thereafter.
Both completed stellar high school careers and look forward to wrestling at Division I colleges.
Martellotti, a Penn State recruit who won PIAA gold in 2007, made his second appearance in a title match last week at Giant Center but lost, 4-3, to Boiling Springs’s; Joe Spisak at 130 pounds.

UNIVERSITY PARK — The sights and sounds of last weekends PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships captivated one group of interested observers.
Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson and assistants Casey Cunningham and Cody Sanderson made stops in Hershey between the Nittany Lions’ preparations for the NCAA Championships, which begin Thursday in Omaha, Neb. The three-day event represented one of the few major tournaments Cael Sanderson, a four-time undefeated NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist, had never attended.

Boiling Springs’ Joe Spisak gets shot at PIAA wrestling gold
…
In the 130-pound final Spisak faces Shady Side Academy senior Frank Martelotti (48-2). The Class AA finals are slated to being at 2:30 p.m.
Martelotti, a Penn State University recruit, brings his own accolades into the final. The senior won the PIAA Class AA 103-pound title in 2007 but dipped to fourth in 2008 at 112. Last year Martelotti, only the 16th WPIAL wrestler to place in four state tournaments, finished with a bronze medal at 130.

HERSHEY, Pa. — Dirk Cowburn barely looked out of breath. It took just 80 seconds for the Coudersport senior to pin his opponent in his first-round bout.
Not a bad way for the two-time champ to start his final PIAA wrestling tournament.
“Every time you come into a tournament like this, your name's in the books … two-time state champs, of course everyone is trying to beat you,” Cowburn said Thursday at the Giant Center. “That's what makes it exciting.”
