A five-day span during winter break saw three wrestlers leave the Penn State wrestling team as coach Cael Sanderson’s intense approach begins to test his wrestlers.

Sanderson confirmed Dec. 30 that Bubba Jenkins and Luke Macchiaroli had left the team. Following the team’s Jan. 3 dual meet at Lock Haven, he announced that Colby Pisani had also departed. He said he did not know if the departures were a result of his intense coaching style.

CDT: Lions, Jenkins cut ties

Bubba Jenkins will make his final run at becoming a NCAA champion somewhere other than Penn State. Jenkins, a former NCAA finalist with one year of eligibility remaining, learned shortly before the semester break from coach Cael Sanderson that he would be receiving a release from his scholarship.

The decision was made by Penn State’s coaching staff, something Jenkins and Sanderson confirmed Thursday.“It was definitely forced upon me,” Jenkins said. “I respect Cael’s decision and I know he’s trying to do what’s good for the team and the program. I’m not mad at him. It’s just part of the game.”

Head coach Cael Sanderson confirmed Wednesday that redshirting senior Bubba Jenkins has left the Penn State wrestling team.

Jenkins redshirted the first half the 2009-10 because of academic ineligibility. In three seasons as a Nittany Lion, Jenkins amassed a 73-21 record.

“Bubba won’t be here next semester,” Sanderson said in a phone conversation. “I don’t know [about his future] for sure. We’re taking requests for releases and that kind of thing, but he won’t be here.”

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State’s starting lineup, precocious freshmen and recent signees are in.

Other top-25 teams such as Lehigh, Missouri, Virginia, Virginia Teach and Pitt are bringing most of their lineups.

Some of Centre County’s current and past high school stars will be there, too.

And if you listen to Penn State coach Cael Sanderson, it took little selling to construct the massive and intriguing field for Sunday’s Nittany Lion Open at Rec Hall.

CDT: Energized Nittany Lions sweep three foes at duals

VESTAL, N.Y. — With no mat-side prodding from his coaches, Penn State’s Frank Molinaro ran to the center of the mat.

He waited for company as Edinboro’s Torsten Gillespie adjusted his left knee pad twice. Gillespie then lumbered to the center for the final 38 seconds of the 149-pound bout.

Even during the third dual of the season’s first demanding day, Molinaro demonstrated subtle changes emerging within the Penn State wrestling program.

Instead of casually trudging toward restarts, these Nittany Lions run, and on Sunday they bounced into three victories, including a 22-9 triumph over 15th-ranked Edinboro during the Sprawl and Brawl Duals at Binghamton University.
