Andy Elder BWI just published an article about Cael’s second recruiting class

In it he lists the class as:

The jewels of the class are twin brothers Andrew and Dylan Alton from Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall, Pa. They were ranked Nos. 2 and 8, overall, by InterMat. Joining them are ranked wrestlers Sam Sherlock (No. 22) from West Mifflin HIgh School in West Mifflin, Pa., Dirk Cowburn (No. 54) from Coudersport High School in Coudersport, Pa., Hank Stinson (No. 70) from Eastern Regional High school in Voorhees, N.J., Frank Martellotti from Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa., Seth Beitz from Juniata High School in Mifflintown, Pa., Nick Ruggear from Oxford High School in Oxford, Pa., and Cameron Kelly from Pittsford Mendon High School in Pittsford, N.Y

One thing continues to trouble me – what about Nate Morgan?

A month ago we saw Morgan, from McCook Nebraska, posing with his family at a press conference he called, ostensibly signing a national letter of intent to come to Penn State. Yet we’ve never heard a peep out of Sanderson or anyone else at PSU.

Is this kid coming here or not?

“Everywhere I would go, whether it was getting breakfast or a haircut, people were saying they can’t wait for 2010-11,” associate head coach Cody Sanderson said. “People are excited about the recruits that are going to be in our lineup. But we left it at that. We owed it to the program to keep our focus on 2009-10.”

Such was the conundrum facing the start of Cael Sanderson’s tenure.

The future looked promising. But the present demanded unwavering attention.

UNIVERSITY PARK — The sights and sounds of last weekends PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships captivated one group of interested observers.

Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson and assistants Casey Cunningham and Cody Sanderson made stops in Hershey between the Nittany Lions’ preparations for the NCAA Championships, which begin Thursday in Omaha, Neb. The three-day event represented one of the few major tournaments Cael Sanderson, a four-time undefeated NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist, had never attended.

“It’s a really impressive tournament,” he said Monday. “I didn’t really get a feel for what it takes even to make it to states until I was there. You look at the quality of every round. It was tough right out of the chute.

”Sanderson spent last Thursday evening and Friday in Hershey with Cunningham, the program’s assistant head coach and lead recruiter. Associate head coach Cody Sanderson watched the tournament’s conclusion with Cunningham, who rarely left a Giant Center suite occupied by veteran Pennsylvania wrestling fans.

Pennsylvania Seniors Making Their Mark on History

Willie Saylor, Editor

The PIAA State Wrestling Championships will be staged this weekend in Hershey. Always a triumphant affair, this year will be increasingly special, as it will serve as a swansong for perhaps the greatest senior class, from any one particular state, in the history of high school wrestling.

Pennsylvania has long been known as a hotbed of wrestling; since about, well, forever.

It’s the reason there’s the Dapper Dan Classic, which pits a national team of all-stars against the Keystone State’s top seniors; the reason there’s twelve Division I wrestling programs in the commonwealth, and a plethora more in lower divisions; the reason the state ranks at or near the top annually of NCAA All-Americans produced; and the reason Cael, ostensibly, came east.

No matter how you slice it, the consensus is that PA is always among the top states in high school wrestling each year. So, it’s not surprising that they have an outstanding crop of seniors this year. What is surprising, even by Pennsylvania standards, is the breadth and depth of their accomplishments

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Cael Sanderson was a college wrestling legend at Iowa State.

He never lost a match, going 159-0 en route to capturing four NCAA titles. He also won a freestyle gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

In April, Penn State pulled off one of the biggest shockers in college wrestling history, hiring Sanderson away from his coaching position at his alma mater.

The high school wrestling season has ended a lot sooner than expected for Sam Sherlock.

“We were hoping the injury wouldn’t keep him out of the postseason tournaments,” West Mifflin coach Tony Salopek said. “He had an MRI last week and the doctor told him it was a torn ACL. He will have surgery this week and will be out for the rest of the season.”
