Penn State fares well at Edinboro Open
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Eleven members of the Penn State wrestling team headed north to take part in the 2010 Edinboro Open and eight of that group earned places at the event. Red-shirts David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio), Jake Kemerer (Greensburg, Pa.) and Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) all earned titles.
Each of Penn State’s entrants was unattached at the non-traditional tournament and, since bouts were not of regulation length (six minutes with three separate two-minute periods instead of seven minutes); none of the results count on the wrestlers records.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Two Penn State freshmen claimed individual titles at the 2010 Floyd `Shorty’ Hitchcock Memorial Open hosted by Millersville University. Freshmen Nick Fischer (Unionville, N.J.) and Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) both went undefeated to win the titles on Sunday at Millersville. All wrestlers were wrestling unattached.
Fischer went 5-0 at 157, including two pins, to claim the title. He downed Rider’s Ramon Santiago 5-1 in the finals and improved to 12-7 on the year. Ruth was a perfect 4-0 at 184, including two pins. He pinned Army’s Colin Whittmeyer in the finals and is now 11-2 on the year.

Recharged Erwin, Molinaro each capture valuable victories

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State senior David Erwin hasn’t been in Ohio since his teenage years, so excuse him for possessing no pre-tournament knowledge of Edinboro’s Chris Honeycutt, another former Buckeye state star.
By early Sunday evening, Erwin knew all about Honeycutt, including how to defeat the wrestler two of his younger teammates couldn’t master.
Erwin used guile to edge Honeycutt 9-8 in the 184-pound final of the annual Nittany Lion Open at Rec Hall. He was one of three Penn State veterans to capture titles. Rejuvenated Frank Molinaro cruised to the 149-pound title while senior Cyler Sanderson edged freshman teammate David Taylor 8-7 in an entertaining final at 157.

BWI – Fans get their first look at Lion grapplers

The matches didn’t count for anything but experience and there was no team score, but that didn’t prevent 2,400 fans from streaming into Rec Hall on Thursday evening for the unofficial start to the Cael Sanderson Era.
In a departure from years past, when varsity wrestle-offs served to help set the lineup and whet the appetites of Penn State wrestling fans, Sanderson introduced the intrasquad dual meet, where the top two healthy wrestlers at each weight, plus one exhibition bout, squared off in blue and white singlets.

Observations:
I was expecting more out of Erwin. Sanderson had called his name out in several interviews and I really expected that he would step up tonight. He didn’t.
